Musical Theatre Audition Songs for Sopranos

Musical Theatre Audition Songs for Sopranos

Are you a Soprano in need an audition song to set you apart from the rest of the crowd? There is no shortage of great songs for Sopranos in the musical theatre cannon, so picking the one that will give you an edge is what I'm aiming for. Here are my personal audition picks for Sopranos.

I have broken them down into two categories: Classical (pre-1960) and Contemporary (post-1960); and within those categories, I have separated them into ballads and uptempo selections.

Classical Ballads (pre-1960)
1. “Something Wonderful” from The King and I (Rodgers & Hammerstein)
2. “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess (George & Ira Gershwin)
3. “Love, Look Away” from Flower Drum Song (Rodgers & Hammerstein)

Classical Uptempo (pre-1960)
1. “If I Were a Bell” from Guys and Dolls (Loesser)
2. “How Lovely To Be a Woman” from Bye Bye Birdie (Charles Strouse and Lee Adams)

Contemporary Ballads (post-1960)
1. “Green Finch and Linnet Bird” from Sweeney Todd (Sondheim)
2. “Some Things Are Meant To Be" from Little Women (Jason Howland & Mindi Dickstein)
3. “Once Upon a Dream” from Jekyll & Hyde (Frank Wildhorn & Leslie Bricusse)
4. "Take Me To The World" from Evening Primrose (Sondheim)

Contemporary Uptempo (post-1960)
1. “The Girl in 14G" (Jeanine Tesori & Dick Scanlan)
2. “The Glamorous Life” from A Little Night Music (Sondheim)

These don't begin to scratch the surface on the literally thousands of excellent songs for Sopranos in the musical theatre genre. These are just my favorites to hear in the audition room as a pianist and music director.
